Black women are joining traditionally white sororities at the University of Alabama, the University announced Friday. University President Judy Bonner said that four black students and two other minority students have accepted bids to pledge white sororities. The move comes after a student newspaper report about some sororities rejecting prospective members because of their race. The University ordered recruitment reopened to help the groups accept minority members. Bonner has called for `"systemic'' change in the Greek system. Gov. Robert Bentley called Friday's announcement a positive first step.
