All about Ericka
Ericka grew up right outside of Birmingham in Pleasant Grove. After graduating , it was off to Jacksonville State University. She majored in Mass Communication and minored in Journalism. Ericka actually got her start in radio as an intern right here in Birmingham at a local "Rock" station and went straight from there to co-hosting a local morning show - to hosting the morning show herself. Then came the call from Magic and the rest is history! Ericka is happily married to Kevin (a Birmingham Firefighter) and they just had a BEAUTIFUL baby girl named Ava.
Ericka's music tastes are very eclectic. "I love a little bit of everything. Mostly, I love music that brings back great or not so great memories. Music that means something. Big Band Swing reminds me of my Mama teaching me to Jitterbug in the den. Charlie Rich reminds me of my Daddy working on the car in the basement. The Eagles remind me of all those records of my sister's that I ruined. (Sorry, Bethie.) Motley Crue reminds me of Jr. High, Metallica reminds me of High School and Pearl Jam, Nirvanna and Bjork reminds me of when I thought I knew EVERYTHING in college."

RO-RO or as Ava calls him: "WO-WO" is the BEST DOG IN THE WORLD!!
A FEW (weird) THINGS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT ERICKA:
1) She can cross one or both eye(s) in either direction.
2) The two almost identical antebellum homes on the hill facing I-59NB (before the Ensley/20th Street exit) were built by Ericka's "great-great-great-great" uncles."...my mother tells me that the entire area was wooded and that the two brothers built the homes for their brides. Oh(!) and they had red hair just like my mama does..."
3) Hank Williams, Jr taught Ericka how to play her first song on the piano (The Entertainer) when she was four years old."...I was about to get in BIG trouble w/my mother because I was performing what I liked to call "acrobats" in my Uncle's upstairs music room at his Christmas party in my party dress. Bocephus realized this, whirled me up into the air and then on the piano bench and proceeded to teach me the song before my mother could get ahold of me...thank goodness!..."
4) Ericka would get into trouble (yet again) w/ her piano teacher when she was a child for changing the end of Beethoven's "Fur Elise". The reason? She thought it sounded better her way...
5) Ericka got into trouble (we're seeing a pattern here) in 6th grade for talking the entire class into skipping."...I knew that my teacher's coffee would kick in right after Bible study - which made for the perfect time for the perfect getaway. The only obstacle was the main office in the middle of the long hallway. My solution? Duck-walk of course pass the office, down the hall and out to the playground. Once we were there, everyone asked me what were we gonna do then? Well, to be honest, I didn't believe anyone would do it, so I hadn't planned that far ahead. I instantly came up w/the great idea of going to North Highland Park -so we did. Except for J. Miller and M. Yancy. Those two stayed behind and told....rat finks! LOL..."
6) If baby Ava is ANYTHING like her mother, Ericka is in for a real treat.

JUST INCASE YOU'RE HAVING A HORRIBLE WORK DAY:
Psalm 23 (For the Work Place)
The Lord is my real boss, and I shall not want. He gives me peace, when chaos is all around me. He gently reminds me to pray and do all things without murmuring and complaining.
He reminds me that He is my source and not my job. He restores my sanity every day and guides my decisions that I might honor Him in all that I do.
Even though I face absurd amounts of e-mails, system crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budget cutbacks, gossiping co-workers , discriminating supervisors and an aging body that doesn't cooperate every morning, I still will not stop--- for He is with me! His presence, His peace, and His power will see me through.
He raises me up, even when they fail to promote me. He claims me as His own, even when the company threatens to let me go. His Faithfulness and love is better than any bonus check.
His retirement plan beats any 401k there is! When it's all said and done, I'll be working for Him a whole lot longer and for that,

THE POTTY TRAINING BLUES -
Wednesday 10-08-2008 10:52am CT
My little one, Ava, has now given her parents what we are calling the “Potty-Training-Blues”.
Everything was going GREAT (we started 8 months ago) and then all of a sudden out from nowhere like a big SMELLY slap in the face, she refuses to use the potty.
Nope, na-uh, no way, no how, nada, neicht, neine….no.She- WILL- NOT- USE- THE- POTTY!!!!!!!
UGGGGGHHHH.
To say that we are a bit frustrated is putting it lightly.
I’m not sure if she just doesn’t want to stop playing or doing what she’s doing at the time to go the potty or if she’s showing some sort of defiance.Either way, I would reeeeally like for it to stop.
Have any sort of advice?I would gladly love to hear it!!Please email me and save my sanity.
So you're buying a new computer? Well, you're in luck, because there's never been a better time -- they're faster, smaller, and more powerful than ever before, and they don't necessarily have to cost you an arm and a leg (in fact, plenty of decent desktops and laptops can be had for less than $500). But should you get a Mac or a PC? Laptop or desktop ? Specs-wise, what difference does having an AMD or Intel processor make? And if you're planning on getting a laptop, how do you make sense of the alphabet soup that is Wi-Fi (802.11a, b, g, n)?
The first decision when shopping for a computer is decide if you need a laptop or a desktop. If you need to work from anywhere except the computer desk in your home, a laptop is clearly the way to go -- many portables are as or more powerful than their bulky, stationery desktop cousins.
The first decision when shopping for a computer is decide if you need a laptop or a desktop. If you need to work from anywhere except the computer desk in your home, a laptop is clearly the way to go -- many portables are as or more powerful than their bulky, stationery desktop cousins.
That said, desktops usually offer more bang for the buck -- $1,000 can buy you a pretty powerful desktop with most of the fixin's you need to live a productive and fun computing life (in other words, it can handle everything from basic office tasks to video editing and music management ), but the same money will only get you a so-so laptop. OPERATING SYSTEM (WINDOWS VS MAC, ETC) Choosing an operating system (OS) -- essentially the tech term for Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux -- for your PC can be a tough decision. Macs are sexy and cool, but can you run all the applications you need on them? (I personally think so. We can now run Window on Macs flawlessly. I do on my Macbook pro when need be)Windows is the industry standard, but can be a security nightmare, and Vista is bloated and slow. Then there is the dark horse, Linux, which is quick on its feet and infinitely customizable, but could give non-geeks migraines if anything stops working as the indie OS is known for being difficult to use.
TECH SPECS AND OTHER FEATURES
This is the really techy stuff. AMD or Intel processors? What speed? How much RAM (random access memory)? The most important thing to look for is RAM, which has the most impact on the speed of your computer. Accept no less than 2-gigabytes (GB), but if you've got the cash, spring for 3- or 4-gigabytes (GB), just to be safe. Especially if you intend to run the resource-hungry Vista. If you're determined to save some money on RAM, then buy the standard 1-gigabyte (GB) and get your technologically-inclined nephew to upgrade it for you after the fact. (Hint: Shopping at Newegg.com could save you up to $100 over the Apple memory upgrade in particular.)
EXTRAS (HARDWARE)
If only you were done with your computer-shopping considerations, but there's more to a computer than simply the computer. How will you get online? What's WAN? And what kinds of extra hardware or peripherals -- monitors, printers, keyboards, speakers, and more -- will you need? Wireless: The wireless mess of 802.11a, b, g, n -- that mysterious set of letters and numbers you see on computer wireless spec lists -- is actually much simpler than it would appear. "802.11n" is the latest and greatest, "802.11g" is the standard and "802.11b" is the original standard. "802.11a" is the red-headed step child that never quite took off, and you probably won't miss it if your wireless card won't support it. I strongly recommend making sure your laptop has "n" installed and it couldn't hurt on a desktop either (who wants to run messy cables all around the house?). It's twice as fast as 802.11g -- ideal for streaming or downloading even HD-quality video over Wi-Fi -- but will still work on "g" networks. If a laptop doesn't have Wi-Fi capability, then don't buy it.
There are other connectivity options to consider when shopping as well. Bluetooth will allow you to use a headset with your PC for placing voice calls over applications like Skype, Google Talk, or Gizmo. It will also allow you to sync your smart phone or use your mobile handset as a modem with a laptop for getting online when Wi-Fi isn't an option. Some keyboards, printers, and mice connect to your computer wirelessly via Bluetooth as well.
If you plan on being out and about with a notebook, but always need to be able to get online, then think about adding a built in 3G cellular WAN (Wide Area Network) connection for broadband speeds from just about anywhere there's a cell phone signal (many ultraportable and thin-and-light notebooks offer this option). You can also get add-on cards for WAN access on laptops that don't have the feature built-in.
Ports: As far as ports (a.k.a. inputs on your computer) go, make sure your computer has at least 2 USB ports, but the more the merrier.
Printers: Printers are usually the last thing shoppers think about when picking up a computer. But instead of settling for what ever aging model is on sale, spring for a quality device. If you print a lot of text documents (teachers and English majors, I'm looking at you), you'll want to drop a little extra cash on a laser printer, which is fast and offers slightly more affordable "ink."
EXTRAS (SOFTWARE)
Lastly, don't forget about software for your new computer. Generally, the best practice is to get as little as you can installed by the manufacturer and buy (or download) exactly what you need yourself. The reality is, most of the software that's preinstalled on new computers is unnecessary and actually slows down your computer considerably so we're particularly big fans Sony's "fresh start" or Dell's "no software preinstalled" options, which will provide new PCs with only the operating system installed. You'll miss out on the free three-month trials and such, but any software that's worth getting for free for three months is worth paying for in the end when you download or install it yourself.
The one thing that might be worth getting is security software. You'll need anti-virus and firewall software on any Windows PC anyway and most manufacturers offer steep discounts on commercial security suites. Otherwise, make sure to keep that PC as clean as possible.

If they fought to get tickets why are there so many empty seats?
This week, even in sports with a serious chance of glory for the nation, there have been hundreds, even thousands, of empty seats.
In Beijing, the age-old Olympic discipline of spin is alive and kicking.
It emerged yesterday that part of Friday's opening ceremony, the bit where 29 giant "footprints of fire" advanced towards the Bird's Nest, was faked. For that section of the program, TV viewers, and those watching on big screens inside the stadium, saw pre-recorded, digitally created fireworks, not real ones.
The worldwide TV audience was said, on the night, to have numbered four billion. This was actually the total possible reach of all the stations carrying the broadcast. The actual audience was a rather lower one billion, five million of whom were in Britain.
In its desperation to be seen as the most perfect Games in human history, Beijing 2008 may have held itself to a standard that it cannot truthfully fulfill.
There really is such a thing as trying too hard.
WHAT IS CONGRESS SMOKING???????
Wednesday 07-30-2008 10:59am CT
Think the economy is depressing? Get a load of what Congress is smoking.
In addition to housing bailouts, the US has spent$1 million researching Syrians addicted to hookahs.
Yup. Hookahs (aka, hubbly-bubbly — I can't make this up.)
Taxpayers are funding research at the Syrian Center for Tobacco Study on whether smoking through a water pipe is less harmful than regular smoking. SERIOUSLY????? SERIOUSLY!!!???
Well, I'm juuuussst dying to know the answer to that, aren't you? Hold on while I get out my checkbook. A spokesman for Citizens Against Government Waste says while research is useful, it's not something that taxpayers should be funding. "Why is the federal taxpayer always the one who has to pay for this? We question whether this is a national priority to figure out the problems of other countries. Let’s figure out our problems and solve those.” The NIH Fogarty Center originating the research stands to get $66 million next year.
Is raising the national debt ceiling the answer? Should more be trimmed from areas like hookah research before the US goes further in the hole?
