Scott Strand, managing partner of the Trak Shak Running Shops and local elite runner, is working with JT on his training for the 5KBR to be held held Saturday, February 11 during the Mercedes-Benz Marathon Weekend Marathon. The 5KBR is a 3.1 mile walking/ running event. JT basically started from scratch in terms of his running background. He had been walking with his wife for a couple weeks leading up to the start of the training on January 2nd. Basically, we've been looking at the preparation for the 5KBR as a stepping stone to better fitness. The goal isn't necessarily for JT to pick a specific finishing time or even that he is able to run the entire distance. It's simply to be able to run a larger percentage of the 5k than previously possible.
JT’s training began with fitting him for the correct running shoes and
socks from the Trak Shak. Now that he has the proper equipment, we’ve been
meeting two times per week for the run/walk. These efforts consist of 30-35 minutes of walking with one minute running sessions interspersed. As time goes on, he will be able to increase the amount of time he runs versus the amount of time he walks. Eventually, JT will be able to run the entire 5k distance. JT either walks or go to the gym on 3 other days for his exercise, helping to improve his fitness level between sessions.
JT visits the Trak Shak in Birmingham to get fitted with the right footwear. And, he gets a surprise call from a Fox 6 personality!
